THE ORIGIN OF THE BENGAL The Bengal Cat that we have in our home today is a descendant of a wildcat (in this case, the Asian Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis)) and domestic cat hybrid. The breed was founded in the 1970s by Californian Jean Mill. Jean Mill breeds under the name 'Millwood' in the Bengal cat world. Many of Dollycats' Bengals have been sired by a Millwood cat.
WHAT ARE "THE FUZZIES"??!! Like wild cats, Bengal kittens go through a stage referred to as 'The Fuzzies'. In nature, the fuzzy appearance of cubs' coats help protect them from predators. Because Bengals are bred to be pretty close to their wild ancestor (the Asian Leopard Cat), this wild trait remains. At around three weeks of age guard hairs appear, fuzzing out the striking pattern. The kitten will be between five and nine months before its sleek adult pattern will emerge. |
